SUSTAINABILITY

Research Unit products are designed through careful use and balance of materials, considering each form and it's function with acute attention to detail and consideration. We believe that one of the greatest forms of sustainability must be to give back to our community, to keep the industry and skills within it, alive and our economy thriving.  Although we’d love our customers to own our carefully considered items we make, we also believe that fewer products, made better, can be treasured for a long time. We aim to therefore create well-made and beautiful everyday product that our customers will be able to use and love for a long time.

MATERIALS |  Designing for a longer life and advancing the use of responsible and ethically produced materials are some of the main priorities in reducing our footprint. Sustainably sourced materials are those that naturally have a lighter imprint on the environment, such as linen, or materials that are consciously produced in a more ethical or responsible manner.

SUPPLIERS | Our Suppliers consist of a foundation of strong relationships who develop quality fabric from skilled people across Cape Town and in other parts of Southern Africa. Our products have been designed around working with these suppliers, who are great in delivering good fabrics and who have therefore had a huge impact on our designs. We allow the material from our suppliers to dictate the form, function and design of product, be it a garment, detail, component or an accessory. It is an important influence on the way we design our products.

Our goal is to develop cleaner methods from all our suppliers for spinning, weaving, dyeing, sewing, and all the other stages of the production process thereby working with suppliers who are also keen on achieving this in the next 5 years.
